SERVICE LEARNING

Starting in Fall 2004, we implemented the Service Learning element across the COS curriculum. Thus, Service Learning opportunities are available to all students as part of their independent projects or possibly through the Spanish program or Seminars.

An example of our first Service Learning Project in the Summer of 2004 was in a social and economic risk elementary school. In coordination with the Spanish Program at the COS, students and staff visited the primary school and carried out a variety of helpful activities where everyone learned and exchanged knowledge. Important activities took place while at the school:

    1. COS students shared warm and friendly conversation with the local young students which allowed them to have an important cultural exchange;
    2. COS students participated in different classes as tough they were active students so they were able to communicate both in English and Spanish with the local kids;
    3. 2 environmentally-oriented murals were painted among the kids, COS students and facilitators.The activities had mutual benefits since the locals were able to improve their English and our students practiced their, but most importantly, there was an amazing cultural encounter. Environmental awareness was promoted, but also the need of cooperation, solidarity and friendship among the peoples of the world.

The COS, our students along with the local population benefited enormously with the Service Learning Experience at this primary school. An important link was established by the COS with the primary school, which was also ratified by a modest donation of supplies needed by the kids.

Such activity makes COS students and academic programs focus its goals on a social awareness of the reality that surround us. It will also open the doors for future COS students for internships, research and community service.
