In this elective course, students participate in a variety of cultural activities and reflect upon the significance of these activities within a Latin American context. Selected readings by Latin American writers and discussions about the texts complement the cultural activities experienced. Students document their learning from the readings and the activities as part of their semester portfolio. Direct experiences increase their awareness, understanding and appreciation of the culture as well as allow them to reflect upon their own cultural perceptions. To explore these cultural aspects, students may participate in group activities organized by the Student Affairs Coordinator and/or explore other cultural aspects independently. Some of the organized group activities focus on different cultural aspects that relate to the topics examined in the Latin American Studies or Introduction to Global Issues seminars and are explored through a variety of means, including field trips, movies, recreational activities, artistic presentations, guest speakers, and workshops. Essential aspects of the participation in the group activities are the promotion of the sense of community, intercultural understanding, and appreciation of cultural diversity.
